Let's honor those killed by ensuring their deaths are recognized accurately and work together to prevent future tragedies.Petition to Classify Preventable Deaths Accurately
To: [Relevant Authorities/Coroners, Medical Examiners, Public Agencies]
We, the undersigned, call for a change in how preventable deaths are classified.
Every year, thousands of people die in preventable tragedies, yet many of these deaths are inaccurately labeled as ‘accidents.’
This misclassification obscures the truth, distorts public data, retraumatizes victims’ families, and hinders meaningful action to prevent future deaths.
We believe:
- Every life matters: Victims of impaired driving crashes and drug poisonings deserve to have their deaths recognized for what they truly are: homicides, not accidents.
- Truth (honesty) and transparency are essential: Official records, public policies, and media narratives should accurately reflect the circumstances surrounding these deaths to promote accountability, justice, respect, and change.
- Education is vital: The public, media, and policymakers must understand that these tragedies stem from criminal and preventable choices. These behaviors must be confronted and changed to reflect the realities of the modern world.
Join the Not an Accident Campaign and help us challenge the language that hides responsibility. By signing this petition, we urge coroners, medical examiners, and public agencies to:
- Classify preventable deaths accurately as homicides not accidents.
- Advocate for changes in public policy that reflect the true nature of these tragedies.
- Educate the public about the choices that lead to these preventable deaths.
- Thoroughly examine and assess the circumstances surrounding these fatalities.
